Andy Shappie, Lehman Catholic High School Class of 1996, spoke with the students of Sister Ginny Scherer’s physics class about his professional experience and how he applies physics to his job.

Shappie, an active full-time law enforcement officer, has been with the Sidney Police Department for 20 years. After earning a bachelor of science in criminal justice from the University of Toledo and completing his basic training with the Ohio State Police Academy, Mr. Shappie began his law enforcement career as a patrol officer. While working at the police department he obtained his Accident & Motorcycle Reconstructionist Certification through the Institute of Police Technology. Shappie has conducted numerous criminal and accident investigations as a police officer.

He shared with the class that traffic crashes leave unique evidence at the crash scene, including gauge marks, skid marks, debris, and other indicators. These indicators, help him to identify factors involved in crashes such as speed and mechanical defects and uses mathematics and physics to determine what caused the crash.

Shappie plans to work as an Accident & Motorcycle Reconstructionist after retiring from the Sidney Police Department.
